Mind Over Matter. Your Mind is Everything!
What does mind over matter mean? Well to me this means simply the power of the mind to control and influence the body and the physical world generally. There are many reasons people would like to learn how to control mind over matter and it is easy to see why. When you can believe that you can do something specific by telling yourself that you can do it, and then suddenly be able to accomplish that challenge due to your positive thoughts then why wouldn’t you want that power?
I believe my thought is stronger than physical things. Some examples of this include:
- The placebo affect
- The nocebo affect
- Munk meditation
- Yoga Meditation
- Dreams healing or injuring you in reality
- Blocking out pain
So how does the placebo effect work? Well it has been proven lately that placebos have begun to work better than actual prescription medication. The placebo affect is where you think it is going to work there for it works. There have been studies where people have given their friends non alcoholic beer and then watched them act like drunken buffoons afterwards. This is all due to the fact that they believed they were drinking actual beer. I have too felt the affect of a placebo, in the form of a medication for nausea. They have ginger pills for nausea and if you believe they are going to work nausea will pass, as told to me by the pharmacist herself. The idea of them working is greater than them actually working.
The nocebo affect is the opposite of the good affect you get from a placebo. Have you ever pictured yourself on a ride you know would make you sick and then suddenly felt nausous. Or how about holding onto an extremely sour candy but not placing it in your mouth and then suddenly finding your mouth completely filling with saliva imagining your face puckering. This also happens in even worse scenarios where people envision themselves touching poison ivy and getting a rash or being stung by a bee and begin to feel pain. It is all the work of the mind.
Munk meditation is something unbelievable and unexplainable at the very least. There have been studies where munks have been placed into extreme cold temperatures and covered with cold wet sheets. The munks begin meditation and suddenly there body temperature rises, steam begins rising and they are able to dry the sheets completely. Munks hold competition to see who can dry the most sheets in one night and prove the power of meditation.
Yogis have some unbelievable meditation techniques as well. It is said that yogis can control their heart rate, respiration, blood volume, and more. One yoga enthusiast travelled to India to see if these were possible to accomplish. The yogis meditating there slowed their heart so it was undetectable by an EKG machine, I find that astonishing. That being said they did another study where people were sealed into air tight boxes. The people meditating inside stayed calm for over 8-10 hours without any kind of panic
Have you ever had a dream where you feel like you are falling and you suddenly wake up grasping the sides of your bed? I have and I know it is a terrifying feeling. There has been talk about people dreaming about catching on fire and waking up with burn marks as well as those who dream of being attacked and wake up with scratch marks but those are just stories. There are other stories out there but none of them have any real proof that shows it is true.
They say if you visualize yourself achieving a goal you will in fact be able to get the job done. This seems especially true in regards to sports and fitness. Many weight lifters try to envision themselves lifting heavy weights and then suddenly become able to do it. The same goes for boxing, boxers visualize their fist hitting behind an opponent’s head which in turn creates a stronger follow through.
Blocking out pain can work in many different ways. Doulas are doctors that train with women during pregnancy for the birth of their baby. They can help woman to overcome the pain of childbirth with simple thought and breathing techniques and they have been able to help woman have babies without any pain killers. Another way of blocking out pain with your mind is by simply picturing something else, and going to another place in the mind. Studies have shown if a person thinks hard enough about something else can go through large amounts of pain without feeling a thing.
My personal favorite is positive thinking. When faced with any challenge in life thinking of it positively keeps your mind in the right place and things just fall into place. When people think negatively they don’t seem to achieve nearly as much as someone thinking positively. This has been a proven theory for years and really helps link everything together. Stay positive and positive things will happen. After it’s all in the mind and what you think. When you think positive, you start projecting the rest of whatever you are thinking positively. And everything you now imagine will have a great end and this allows you to work towards it with greater passion. When imagine something as going to fail, the quality of our efforts also drops, making it impossible for even a miracle to happen. Think positive and control an unfavorable situation firstly in the mind and then it will automatically become favorable for you in reality.
